Jammu, July 12: The National Secular Forum (NSF) has expressed displeasure over the attempts of Jammu University (JU) authorities to clandestinely closing the Buddhist Studies department by imposing such conditions which cannot be fulfilled by the students of the region.
Addressing a press conference here today, NSF General Secretary Narinder Singh said that JU authorities recently issued a notification wherein it had been maintained that the students seeking admission in PG Department of Buddhist Studies must have 'Diploma in Paali' otherwise they would not be considered for admission.
Citing the order, Singh alleged that it was a conspiracy to shut the Buddhist Studies department as none of students of Jammu possess this diploma hence they won't be able to take admission in the department.
"Ironically, none of the educational institution in Jammu province awards 'Diploma in Paali' then how come students will acquire this and become eligible for MA in Buddhist Studies. It clearly shows that the notification is aimed at blocking admissions to Buddhist Studies department," he said.
Singh squarely blamed Vice Chancellor Prof R D Sharma for hatching this conspiracy with the help of his aides to deprive the students of Jammu from this course which has worldwide acceptance. "The entire world is promoting Buddhist Studies as an effort to reach out the ancient concepts but JU authorities are trying to close down this department which is highly deplorable," he alleged.
The NSF sought immediate revocation of the notification asking University to make admission on the previous criteria so that more and more students could apply in this department and study this ancient subject which contributes in world peace. Singh otherwise threatened to launch agitation on campus in this regard.
Among those who were present in the press-conference included, Amit Sanotra, Varun Kumar and Navjot Singh.
