Farooq's demand for Assembly dissolution, fresh polls is right | | | NC president Farooq Abdullah is not wrong in demanding dissolution of the state Assembly to be followed by fresh elections because there has been inordinate delay in the formation of the Government after the demise of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who passed away on January 7 and it is really surprising as to why PDP did not come forward to form government when Governor N.N.Vohra sent invitation to party president Mehbooba Mufti and the state BJP chief Sat Sharma as many as 10 days ago. PDP has already elected Mehbooba Mufti as leader of the party's legislature party but there has been inordinate delay in the government formation. What is more surprising is that so far PDP has not announced snapping of ties with BJP, with which it has shared power for over 10 months. Despite the fact that Mehbooba has been authorised by her party to take a final call on government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, she has stated that she wasn't "in a hurry". Speaking at the end of five-hour-long deliberations in which most of her party leaders suggested that she should go with the alliance that her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had stitched with the BJP, she said that she would not "rush in haste". Mehbooba thanked the party leaders, including MPs, legislators and senior functionaries for having reposed faith in her in the task of formation of the government. But she has made it known that she is not like her father who could conduct even a difficult political experiment by joining hands with BJP. She has said that Mufti Sayeed by stitching an alliance with the BJP had taken a bold step. And she will follow her father's decision if she felt that she can fulfill the dreams of Mufti Sayeed. This was her guarded reply to most of the party leaders who wanted her to follow her father by keeping the alliance in tact. Does it mean that she is thinking about other alternatives. But informed sources are of the opinion that she does not have any other option for forming the government. Yes, she can form the government with the support of the Congress, which has 12 MLAs, but she does not treat some independent MLAs, without whose support she cannot form the Government, dependable. Second option would have been to align with the National Conference but there is no possibility of such an alliance because the two are main political rivals in Jammu and Kashmir. Then what is her option? She is simply waiting for a solid confirmation of central government's support on the agenda of alliance which means release of additional funds. But she should understand that after the Union Finance Ministry has assured her of financial support, she cannot wait for long. Let PDP ponder over one thing. If the Government of India accepts the demand made by Farooq Abdullah for holding fresh election after dissolving the Assembly, will it suit the party or not ? In any case, early election will help neither PDP nor BJP as both have shared power for over 10 months but the performance of the coalition government has been poor in all respects. They won't be able to perform better. That is the reason for BJP to maintain silence otherwise it would have most probably withdrawn support to PDP, thereby aggravating level of constitutional and political crisis. It is still time for the two parties to take an early decision on government formation. |
