Govt fails to revive 200 sick units | Deadline set for aspiring entrepreneurs to establish units | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Srinagar, Jan 19: While government has failed to revive the 200 sick units in the state, authorities have set up the deadline to the aspiring entrepreneurs who have failed to establish their units on the industrial land. According to the official figures, 80 sick industrial units have been identified in Kashmir region with Srinagar district topping the list having 35 units followed by Pulwama with around 15 units. In Jammu region, Jammu district has around 60 sick units followed by Udhampur and Samba districts having around 30 such units. Although a State Level Revival Committee was constituted in 1999 and identified sick units but government has "failed" to revive them. The state government also constituted a sub-committee in 2013 to conduct a fresh survey and ascertain the viability of all the sick units. "But no visible changes seem on the ground as government has not taken any concrete measures," sources said. Official sources said poor infrastructure, lack of government's attention was the main reason for failure in revival of sick industrial units in the state. In Kashmir region, soft loans of around Rs 3.5 crore were approved but sources said the amount was not enough for revival of around 80 sick units which are lying defunct. "The industrial sector witnessed heavy losses over the years. Government with the support of banks need to give good amount of soft loans to each unit holder so that they could revive these units which will generate employment avenues in the state," an official of Industries Department said. Officials said the initiative for rehabilitation of sick units should primarily come from the financial institutions to provide hassle free loans to these unit holders. While hundreds of kanals of industrial units are unutilized in the state as scores of aspiring entrepreneurs had failed to set units on the industrial land. Since 1995, the Industries and Commerce department had provided hundreds of kanals of land to these entrepreneurs at the lower prices at Samba, Bari Brahmana, Rangreth, Lassipora, Kuthua and Gandyal. The land was provided at the low prices aimed at generation of employment opportunities and to grow the industrial sector of the state. However, government has sent notices to these people to utilize the land or their licenses will be cancelled. "Some of them have acquired the industrial land back in 2000, even after a decade and a half no initiative has been made by these beneficiaries despite receiving subsidies from the government," he said. The land was provided at low prices aimed at generating employment opportunities and to grow the industrial sector of the state. Secretary Industries and Commerce R K Bhagat said the government was making efforts to revive the sick units established in the state. "Directions has been passed to various departments of the Industries and Commerce to take action from March 1 against those people who have failed to set their units on the industrial land," Bhagat said. |
