Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 19: Although both Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) have dropped enough hints that they are going to form the next Government in the State a former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir believes otherwise.
National Conference working President and former CM Omar Abdullah yet again jumped the gun today by saying that PDP and BJP have no reason to deny the people of State a popular Government. Omar's remarks came two days after core group of meeting of PDP in which it was decided in a subtle manner that the party is ready to renew its alliance with BJP in the State.
However, the working President of National Conference believes that PDP is yet to make up its mind on forming the next Government in the State with BJP. It was due to this reason only that Omar has written an open letter to PDP President Mehbooba Mufti asking her to clarify the party position over the formation of next Government in the State.
In the letter Omar has said that if PDP believes that they cannot form the Government in the State they should recommend for the dissolution of the Assembly so that fresh elections are held in the State. His assertion is in contrast to his father's recent statement that NC is ready to discuss the Government formation in State with BJP if the later contacts them in this regard.
Omar's calculation is that if elections are held at this point of time then the PDP would be wiped out from Kashmir with National Conference being the major beneficiary. He sees a ray of hope in the political combination that may come up if the elections to the State Assembly are held at this point of time.
On the other hand the PDP cannot think of severing ties with BJP at this moment as it would send a negative signal to the people living across the length and breadth of the State. If PDP decides to part ways with BJP then people would believe that PDP Patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed committed mistake by joining hands with BJP in February 2015.
BJP, PDP's coalition partner in the previous dispensation too is in fear of losing seats in case the elections are held soon. There is a strong resentment against the party in the Jammu division with people accusing the party leadership of backtracking from its promises. Since the rehabilitation of people hit by shelling from across the border has not taken place so far the BJP leaders are being looked upon as 'enemies' by the common masses in Jammu. The party has also failed to provide package to the West Pakistan refugees and this too has dented its image.
There is a general feeling among the masses across the State that PDP and BJP would join hands soon to form the next Government in the State. Leaders of both these parties know that election at this time would prove disastrous for them and as such it would be better to form Government so that something is 'achieved' at the end of tenure.
