Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 19: The PDP president Mehbooba Mufti lost her father and mentor on January 7 but the tragedy seems to have conferred political maturity on her. The way she has handled things since the death of her father has won her a number of admirers especially in the valley. Mehbooba's silence on government formation evoked a reaction from National Conference patron, Dr Farooq Abdullah. He hinted at extending outside support to the BJP to keep `PDP out of power'. Although he denied having issued the statement, the PDP won a few political points. Since January 7, Mehbooba has been widely hailed for putting the government formation on hold. According to insiders, she believes the Prime Minister did not pay the respect that Mufti Muhammad Sayed deserved during the November 7 rally at Srinagar. The Prime Minister while responding to Mufti's Sayeed's suggestion of taking counsel from Kashmiris said: " I do not need anybody's suggestion on Kashmir."
The Prime Minister's statement was taken with a pinch of salt by the PDP supporters especially by Mehbooba.
The PDP president besides putting the government formation on hold has played her cards like a matured politician. Without succumbing to the BJP pressure of surrendering some portfolios, she has conveyed in clear terms that the PDP cannot be taken for granted by the coalition partner. The message has also been clearly conveyed to some insiders. While the PDP has to go with the BJP for government formation some ministers may be stripped of their portfolios.
A senior political analyst while commenting on Mehbooba's handling of the situation since January 7 said: "Mehbooba has her feet inside the coalition boundaries but she is eyeing the next elections which most likely may be held before completion of the term of the incumbent Assembly."
