6 months on, agreement on minimum wage not implemented | Gun factories' owners betray workers | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 19: Hundreds of workers of Gangyal gun factories who had fought a long battle against the owners by sitting on continuous dharna over a month in support of their demand of implementation of minimum wage, have been betrayed by the owners. Sources told Early Times that the factories' owners hoodwinked, betrayed, backed-stabbed the gullible workers by not honouring the agreement which was reached between the owners and the workers' leaders in presence SDM Jammu at his office some six months ago. "The workers, who were being exploited by the factories' owners by paying them paltry salary, were denied their legitimate right of minimum wage which was their long pending demands despite agreement between them. The denial by the gun factories' owners has left the poor workers at the mercy of God as nobody from the concerned department has come forward for their help," sources said. They said the violation of the agreement by the owners is only because of lackluster attitude of the Labour Department, which is hand in glove with the factories' owners and is helping them by not taking any action against them. The strong affiliation between factories' owners and the Labour Department can be gauged from the fact that the latter did not take any action against the former for dishonoring the agreement. "Had the Labour Department handled the issue seriously in the beginning, the matter would have been resolved long back, but the apathetic attitude of the concerned department towards labour class has prolonged the issue," sources said. Pertinently, the workers went on strike on May 12, 2015 in support of minimum wage, and the strike lasted over a month. Later on June 15, 2015, a agreement between workers and owners reached in which owners had conceded their legitimate demands including implementation of minimum wage, Provided Funs and ESI, in presence of SDM Jammu. But is has been more than six months the owners threw the agreement into the wind by not honouring it till date. |
