Protests held in Jammu, seeks strict action against accused | Student’s death | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 19 : Youth and Students associated with All India Confederation of SC/ST/OBC Organisations staged protest over the death of Rohith Vemula, a doctorate student at the Hyderabad Central University. Students and Youth associated with wing of Confederation assembled in large numbers at Baba Sahib Dr B R Ambedkar Chowk Rail Head Complex, Jammu and raised slogans against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (AVBP) and Ministry for Human Resources Development (MHRD). Protesters stated that Vemula, was one of the five Dalit scholars, who was expelled by the University in 2015 for allegedly attacking a student activist belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in August. Since then they were barred from entering the administrative building, hostels, libraries, mess and other common areas. They later formed a Joint Action Committee for Social Justice (JAC) to fight back against the university's decision. Following Vemula's death, they demanded police to register a case under SC/ST Atrocity Act against Union Minister and BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya while alleging that he had written to HRD ministry seeking action against these research scholars. R K Kalsotra State President SC ST OBC Confederation called upon the Government that person responsible behind such heinous crime may be booked and punished under law prohibiting further nefarious design of the person responsible for such heinous action and serving their design dividing the social fabric of samaj. Students led by Sahil Dogra, Zulfqar Choudhary, Ashwani Kumar and Rohit Attri, Adtya Hans warned the Centre Government as well as Hyderbad Government to immediately sack the VC of the Hyderbad University otherwise they continue the struggle. |
