Early Times Report
Anantnag, Mar 2: Various forests including wildlife areas sustained damages due to wildfire allegedly due to human interference in this southern district. However, forest department officials blame dry weather. Reports said that on Monday wildfire broke out in compartment Number 51 in Kullar-Bijbehara forests and forest department took two days to douse the flames. According to reports fire has damaged a vast forest cover, which is habitat of many rare species including endangered Hangul. Similarly another fire broke out in Yeshnad, Aishmuqam area of the district in compartment Number 20/A on Tuesday evening, however still this evening, the wildfire wasn't brought under control although employees tried their best. Fire has so far damages number of trees and rare spices of plants having medicinal value. Locals told Early Times that they suspect some miscreants in nexus with the employees have put the forests on fire. "I have been working on drafting the Action Plan for Forest Fire Mitigation, this is very unfortunate that the lack of Standard Operating Procedures - SOPs between the various wings of Forest Department and lack of coordination, is adding to the problems," says noted environmentalist, Advocate Nadeem Qadri. However senior officials of the department defended their field staff and blamed dry weather spell for forest fires. "The temperature is rising and grass is dry. This is one of the major causes of the fire outbreak. I am monitoring the situation," Divisional forest officer Lidder told Early Times. He said that they have doused the fire and his filed staff is keeping a vigil in their respective jurisdictions. |
