Guv to amend NFSA | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 2: The Governor NN Vohra is amending the National Food Security Act (NFSA) in the State and the administrative council meet shall be convened on March 3 in this regard at Raj Bhawan. Top sources revealed that the administrative council meet will laid emphasis over amending the new Food Act due to the implementation of which uproar has been witnessed all across the State. The Governor, as per sources, will held the meet with his advisors, Chief Secretary of the State and senior State officials to discuss the amendment to be made in the new Food Act. Sources said it is likely that the ration quota will be enhanced and some provisions will be amended while keeping in view the public outrage that has been witnessed since the day the Government announced the NFSA implementation in the State. "A high level meeting over NFSA is being held and Governor will chair this meeting. The resentment coming from people in the State shall be discussed at threadbare and that it is most likely that the Food Act will be amended by the Government," sources said. It was informed that the Union Government has been informed about the protests which have rocked the State after the new Food Act implementation and measures to amend the act have also been discussed with the Union CAPD Ministry. Pertinently, under NFSA there is an outer cap for people living in urban areas. Only 50% of the population of the urban areas is entitled to subsidized food grains, unlike rural areas where 75% of the population has been fixed for entitlement. Among the 50% of the population in the urban areas, those identified for subsidised food grains have to satisfy criteria of eligibility. It is the criteria of eligibility which deprives a large section of our people from entitlement to the food grains under law. It was accused by many that apart from unrealistic and misevaluated criteria of eligibility, the quantity of food grains to be provided to the State is only 7.51 lakh tons. Under the earlier position, the subsidised food grains were provided on per family basis. Each family was entitled to 35 kilograms of food grains per month. By enforcing law, the quantity of food grains has been drastically reduced. The PDP in the past too has voiced concern and had appealed the Governor to review the law- keeping in view the large resentment being exhibited by the people of the State at large. Muzzafar Hussain Beigh had pitched for amending of the NFSA and stated that the new Food Act should be amended at an earliest. |
