Panchayat, ULB elections big challenge for BJP | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 2: It may not be a cake walk for BJP to win the forthcoming panchyat and Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections which were announced by Governor N N Vohra recently. These elections would be a big challenge for BJP to save its image. The party has already received a serious jolt with PDP showing reluctance to join hands with it in government formation after the death of ex-chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has taken a tough stand and sought a guarantee from BJP that the agenda of alliance be made time bound and her party's proposals be given priority. This has put BJP in a quandary. According to sources, BJP is unable to accept the conditions put forward by Mehbooba in view of the serious criticism faced by it from various opposition parties for joining hands with PDP. BJP can't afford any more criticism as elections in five states are round the corner and opposition can play the PDP card in these elections to make its position awkward. To avoid the opposition onslaught and also avoid the chance of giving its rivals an edge over it in the forthcoming assembly elections in five states, BJP can't afford to give nod to pre-conditions set by Mehbooba, sources added. "This is one of the reasons that BJP high command is tight-lipped over joining hands with PDP and accepting the latter's any new proposal. Even the party high command has motivated its cadres not to be in hurry for government formation and instead purse a wait and watch policy," sources said. Sources said that BJP had also not shown any seriousness in contacting the other opposition parties despite the fact that NC patriarch Farooq Abdullah had on the day one after his return from UK shown indication of his party to come forward in government formation in case PDP shows reluctance. However, BJP did not attach any importance to his statement as the party did not want to betray the people's mandate. BJP was also wary of the fact that opposition parties could target it, saying it had no right to criticise those who raised anti-national slogans at JNU because in J&K, it had again joined hands with PDP. Sources said under the prevailing situation, BJP's chances of repeating the charisma of 2014 state polls during the forthcoming ULB polls were remote as the party had failed to redress people's grievances during its 10-month rule in J&K in coalition with PDP. |
