Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 2: People including women visiting office of the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar are put to grave inconvenience as the toilets of the office have been locked, reportedly at the behest of officers. "Since the authorities have locked the toilets people visiting here have to answer the call of nature in the open," an elderly visitor told expressing anguish. Habib-ullah, a visitor who had visited DC office said if the authorities did not want to keep these toilets open, why was money from the public exchequer spent on them. "I found myself in extreme difficulty as there was an urge to answer the call of the nature and all the lavatories were locked by the authorities," he said. The insiders admitted that a scene of indignity is witnessed daily near the Deputy Commissioner's office where the men folk urinate openly in various corners or alleys. "For women it becomes more difficult to find a closed space for the same and they are too forced to do it in open under utter helplessness," a local said. Inaccessible toilets and bathrooms in Srinagar make women more vulnerable to various forms of gender-based violence," Notably , a survey, conducted by Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, for the year 2014-15 has revealed that cities in JK were performing poorly under the centrally sponsored scheme with Srinagar ranked at 152nd and Jammu at 427th. A top official said the toilet blocks in city continue to be in unhygienic conditions given the callous attitude of the government. "Toilet facilities and their hygienic conditions has remained least priority for the civic agencies, even the much hyped Swachh Bharat flagship program was just a self-proclaimed success in JK,". |
