CUJ: Nandini Bhattacharya shunted out, Rekha made to put in papers | | | ET Report jammu, Mar 2: The Early Times in its issue of February 20 broke the story on the anti-India seminar, which was held in the University of Jammu on February 18 in the Convocation Hall, the Business School. The event had been organized by the Department of Political Science in collaboration with a controversial NGO, Lehar. The paper had reported that Prem Shankar Jha (Delhi), Radha Kumar (Delhi), Siddiq Wahid (Srinagar), Gul Mohammad Wani (Srinagar), Bashir Assad, Nandini Bhattacharya (West Bengal) and Rajni Shaleen Chopra (Delhi) - all pro-Kashmir and pro-separatist - had participated in the event that had outraged the nationalists in the campus some of whom had approached the Jammu University Vice Chancellor to intervene to defeat the game plan of anti-nationals, but with no result. The organizers of the event went ahead. The report had also said: "Two Jammu-based JNU-trained lady teachers (including Rekha Chowdhary) - apart from a few other Jammu University teachers, were the other participants in the anti-India event. These two teachers are also well-known for their perverted thinking and very close relations with anti-national forces in the Valley. Happymon Jacob (JNU), who also served the Jammu University for some time when Amitabh Mattoo was the Vice-Chancellor, was also found meeting certain teachers of Jammu University, especially those indoctrinated by the JNU, which mostly produces Maoists terrorists, separatists and rebels". The story had further said: "There are elements in Kashmir and New Delhi and hostile nations such as Pakistan and United States which feel now is the time to strike and get J&K out of India. They believe that the present dispensation at the Centre is very weak and it could be exploited. The concerned Professors and students of the Jammu University, according to reliable sources, informed the Jammu University Vice-Chancellor that "certain undesirable elements from different parts of the country would assemble on the campus and indulge in undesirable activities and he must ensure that no such activity took place, but he took no action". "He only wrote to the organizer that he should see to it that no anti-India activities took place during the meeting," sources further informed. The story had produced the desired results. While the Vice-Chancellor of Jammu Central University, according to a credible source, has shunted out Nandini Bhattacharya, HoD English Department, he has also made Swami Vivekananda Chair Professor Rekha Chowdhary to put in her papers. The ouster of Bhattacharya and Rekha Chowdhary from the CUJ should be construed as a major development in the otherwise separatist-infested J&K, where the undesirable elements have been ruling the roost and vitiating the political environment not only in Kashmir but also in Jammu, which is known as the nation's backbone in the State. The development should be considered a warning to CUJ Vice-Chancellor Ashok Aima and Jammu University Vice-Chancellor RD Sharma that they must ensure that no anti-national activities takes place in the university campus in future and action shall be taken against those who would organize such activities and those in the Universities who facilitate organization of such activities. Meanwhile, according to a report, inquiry has been instituted against Bhattacharya who allegedly made anti-Hindu remarks during the event. "Enraged over alleged defamatory remarks of the professor, students of Jammu University (JU) brought the matter to the knowledge of the higher-ups and an inquiry against the professor has been initiated by the CUJ…A written complaint in this regard had been lodged with the higher-ups to take appropriate action against the professor for allegedly hurting sentiments of a particular religion. A copy of the complaint has already been forwarded to the Vice Chancellor (VC) of CUJ, Prof Ashok Aima, to investigate the matter…The Vice Chancellor of CUJ had been asked to complete the investigation in a fixed time," the report has said. The report quoting sources and based on the written complaint has further said: "During the seminar, Prof Nandani Bhattacharya, Head, Department of English, CUJ, had made extremely derogatory remarks against Hindu religion…The statement made by Prof Bhattacharya was highly derogatory and made consciously to divide the students of Jammu University following Hindu religion and to develop hatred, enmity and disaffection against each other. The statement has been made intentionally to hurt religious sentiments of the followers of Hindu religion. It was against a particular section and was made deliberately to create a divide among students…appropriate action against the professor should be taken for trying to generate hatred and enmity among students of Jammu University". It is heartening not to note that the authorities in the CUJ have finally acted by firing two controversial lady Professors. However, this is not enough. What is required is a stringent action against them so that a moral effect is produced and no teacher of any standing dares to vitiate the academic atmosphere in the universities. |
