Finally sky turned cloudy, rain expected during next 48 hours in State

SRINAGAR, Mar 2: After a long dry spell coupled with above normal mercury, presenting a spring like weather conditions, sun was today playing hide and seek in the Kashmir valley, where isolated rain is predicted later today till March 4.
However, the minimum temperature witnessed further surge in the valley while people in Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region continued to shiver due to below freezing temperature. A Met department spokesperson said here this afternoon that a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) has finally hit the region which could result in isolated rain in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region later today till March 4 while weather will remain dry in Ladakh region during the next 24 hours.
Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himlayas, was the only place in the Kashmir valley where the minimum temperature was sub zero, though it was still above normal. The maximum temperature at the world famous health resort was nine degree above normal, resulting in melting of snow on the upper reaches.
Against yesterday's minus 2.4 degree, the minimum temperature at Pahalgam was minus 1.3 degree, a notch below normal while at Gulmarg, the world famous ski resort in north Kashmir it was 1 degree, five degree above normal. The maximum temperature there was also nine degree above normal, a cause of concern for all those connected with tourist industry as snow on the ski slopes would melt early. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, and Kupwara in north Kashmir the minimum temperature was one degree which is being considered normal during this time of the season. However, the maximum temperature yesterday at Qazigund and Kupwara was 9 and 8 degree above normal respectively. At Kokernag the minimum temperature was 4.3 degree, more than five notches above normal, spokesman said. People in the summer capital, Srinagar, after witnessing a notch above normal minimum temperature, woke up to yet another sunny morning. However as the day progressed sun started playing hide and seek and there is a forecast for rain from later today till March 4.
Met spokesperson said there is possibility of light rain and thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperature will be around 18 degree and 3 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in the city. Leh recorded further drop in the minimum temperature and settled at minus 7.6 degree against yesterdays minus 6.9 degree while at border district of Kargil it was minus 6 degree against yesterdays minus 6.4 degree.
