Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 18: At the time when Kashmir and Ladakh region requires sufficient construction material for developmental works, the government of India owned Steel Authority of India limited fails to maintain inventory of key construction materials at its Pampore stock yard.
According to the sources the steel authority of India limited owns a stock yard at Pampore which is a feeding source to all the central and state government departments in Kashmir and also in Ladakh region to supply various kinds of key constriction materials.
But as per the sources the stock yard at Pampore has over the years fails to maintain all kinds of sufficient inventory and literally has not adhered to the schedule of timely supplies.
According to the sources the departments at number of times have moved to Punjab, Haryana and Delhi for procurement of the construction material which proves to be not economically viable preposition.
Sources said that the steel authority even has no sales outlets in the Kashmir and Ladakh division at district headquarters.
"Even the local industry who are in the activity of manufacturing and fabrication of high profile items, require the steel authority material, but the shortage of material keeps on hunting them.
There are reports that huge finances are made in advance by the government departments which remain at the disposal of steel authority of India limited for years together. "Despite making huge payments in advance, the steel authority does not supply timely material,'" said one of the executive engineers.
The another engineer on condition of anonymity stated that the steel authority has never provided timely and sufficiently required material which forces the government departments to bank on the private market at Mandi, Panjab and Jammu.
Sources said that the present requirement in Kashmir and Ladakh division is more that 15 thousand tons of various key construction material and against this the steel authority Pampore maintains a stock of 500 tons only. It needs to be mentioned that stock yard Pampore has a sufficient space and capacity to stock 20 thousand tons of the material. When ET contacted SAIL Srinagar Branch Manager, though he could not justify the reason for not maintaining the variety of stocks, but said that in case huge stocks are kept at stock yard Pampore he can be charge- sheeted for that. "The entire requirement of Kashmir division is compiled at the initial months of the year and the demand is registered at the sale headquarters against which material in staggered formation is transported to avoid blockade of inventory and also avoiding lost of the company," the manger maintained. The officials also confirmed that the company receives huge payments from the government departments in advance, but said that the departments are duty bound to inform steel authority for making online transfer of money.
The official however admitted that the stock yard has only 7 tons of CGI sheet. "At present SAIL Srinagar have only seven tons of CGI sheet and 50 tons demand has been projected which is yet to be received," he said.
Meanwhile sources further informed that the entire valley is busy in the construction works which requires CGI sheets for roofing purpose but surprisingly the steel authority maintains a meager stock of seven tons.
