Indian political class always ignored nationalists in JK | Jammu's grievance | | ET Report JAMMU, June 18: Jammu has several grievances, but their fundamental grievance is that it is the Indian political class and the Delhi Darbar, which have never considered the nationalists in the state a factor in the state's political situation. "The nationalists in the state are not considered part of the solution; they are considered part of the problem the nation has been facing in Kashmir since 1947. Those who matter in Delhi consider Valley the whole of the state and its aspirations as the aspirations of the entire population of the state. The approach is fundamentally flawed, and even dangerous. We do not consider Kashmiri separatists and the so-called mainstream Kashmiri leadership a threat to our identity. They are the creations of the Indian political class and the Delhi Darbar. They can be rendered irrelevant in no time; only the Indian political class and the Delhi Darbar have to stop pampering and appeasing them. Once it happens, they will become a story of the past. Nor do we consider Pakistan a factor. The Indian army defeated Pakistan in 1947-1948, 1965, 1971 and 1999 and will again defeat it comprehensively if required. If we could create Bangladesh out of Pakistan in 1971, we can also create Balochistan state out of Pakistan. We are a mighty nation and we have army which can break Pakistan into smithereens. What we need is a drastic change in the attitude of the Indian political class and the Delhi Darbar towards Jammu and Kashmir and the different people it houses. We want New Delhi to adopt a holistic approach towards the state so that Jammu and Ladakh get its due share in the polity as part and parcel of the Indian polity; so that the political and socio-economic aspirations of these two regions are fulfilled. This is possible only if the Indian political class and the Delhi Darbar are willing to examine the adverse impact of their fundamentally Kashmir-centric approach or if they are willing to appreciate that their policy has, on the one hand, damaged the national cause in Kashmir and, on the other, weakened the nationalist constituency in the state, the nation's backbone". This is the general view among the nationalists in Jammu and Kashmir, which the people articulate day-in and day-out while bemoaning New Delhi's whole policy towards Jammu and Kashmir. This is a rational view. Indeed, those who governed the country after independence did consider Kashmir the most important factor and evolved, adopted and implemented policies which were patently Kashmir-centric and which drove the state away from India step by step, much against the wishes of the people of Jammu and Ladakh, who never appreciated the politics, Kashmir-style. The policy/policies New Delhi adopted only pampered Kashmiri leadership and rendered Jammu and Ladakh unreal and ineffective for all practical purposes. The results are there for all of us to see. Kashmir has become den of anti-national activities and communal politics. The nationalists have vacated the Valley to save their lives, honour and dignity. Jammu and Ladakh are seething with anger and discontent. Minorities are in the state, all inhabiting Jammu region, are feeling unsafe and insecure. These also include the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus, refugees from Pakistan and POJK. It would be only desirable if New Delhi looks back and recognizes that its policies have failed the nation and created a volcanic situation not only in Kashmir but also in Jammu where the alienated people are weighing various options to force New Delhi undo the wrongs it committed in its desperate bid to pamper Kashmir. Remember, there are important political persons in Jammu who have started saying that Jammu is the chief factor; Jammu represents the nation in the state and they will not accept any solution that doesn't fully empower Jammu and the nationalist minorities but also that doesn't integrate the state fully into India. This is the whole situation. The sooner New Delhi appreciates it, the better. |
