Handwara, June 18: Dozens of policemen and local residents were injured, after sporadic clash erupted between two groups over the burial of middle aged lady on Saturday at Kakroosa village of Handwara in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.
A local resident of Kakroosa Mushtaq Ahmad told Early Times that a lady Khatooni Begum (51) w/o Lt Abdul Ahad Rather died today morning at SKIMS Soura Srinagar and was brought back to her ancestral village for her last rites.
"There is a local graveyard (Maqbooza Ehlie Islam) of measuring 41 Kannals in Kakroosa village which is used by all the residents for burying the dead bodies of their near and dear ones, but today the graveyard turned into a battle ground as local residents objected the burial of deceased lady," said Mushtaq Ahmad.
"Today's clashes have apparently proved that we have lost humanity in all respects, he regretted.
Giving further details he said, "The said graveyard land which was given to (Maqbooza Ehlie Islam) for graveyard has been divided among two- Harkar Mohalla, Jogandar, and Khan Mohalla, while as the people of other Mohallas including Rather, Gammandar, War, Rasool Rather and Sheikh Mohalla were also allowed to bury their kith's and kin's in this graveyard." "Earlier this piece of land was given to local residents of this village by Lok Adalat and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir for graveyard, so that they can bury their people here, added Ahmad.
Meanwhile according to sources "The group which didn't allow other group to bury the old lady in the graveyard maintained that they have sold it and won't allow anyone to bury dead here and their objections gave the heated arguments an ugly turn. "Relatives of the deceased were digging the grave for last rites of deceased lady when other group assembled outside the graveyard and started pelting stones upon them which resulted into clashes, locals said. They said meanwhile local police too was called in to handle the situation but both the policemen and the relatives of the deceased were injured in heavy stone pelting from other side. "Police resorted to teargas to disperse the agitating youth but the protesting locals pelted stones on them due to which many policemen were also injured in clashes, sources said, adding that dozens of people were injured.
The injured have been identified as Mohammad Ashraf War, Abdul Rashid Bhat, Fareed Rather, Javid Khan, Ghulam Rasool Khan, Mohammad Younis and Shabir Ahmad War of Kakroosa village.
After the incident, police provided security to the deceased relatives so that they could perform last rituals of the departed soul without any problem.
"Meanwhile the concerned authorities have taken a strict note of this issue and action will be taken against the violators of the order which was earlier passed by the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, sources added.
