Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, June 9: The recent surge in militant activities in the valley has kept government on toes and in order to ensure the smooth conduct of the Yatra, the government has decided to put extra security measures in place much before its commencement.
It has been learnt from sources that a three tier security plan will be in place well before July 5 when the yatra for this year would commence. Sources said that the entire process of laying the security will be completed in a week's time.
Sources said that the government is committed to ensure the smooth conduct of the Yatra which assumed significance because of spurt in the militancy related activities this year.
Sources said that both the roads (Baltal and Pahalgam) that lead to the cave will be monitored by the police and paramilitary forces, deployment for which will be made from June 15. Sources said that for this purpose, additional reinforcement will be sent by the centre.
"While the police and the paramilitary forces will provide security on the routes leading to the cave, the army will be located on the mountain tops, overlooking the entire Pahalgam area. Police and paramilitary forces will have the additional responsibility of securing the Jammu-Srinagar and Pathankot-Madhapora highways," said sources.
Sources said that as the Baltal route is smaller than the Chandanwari route, the concentration of the security will be along the later one. The government has taken the adequate measures and has made sure that no pilgrims' attempt to visit the cave well before the scheduled time.
"The administration is doing everything possible to clear the roads of the snow for the convenience of the pilgrims though it will take some more time. The recent snowfall on the hills around the cave has hampered the snow clearing operation to some extent," said sources.
Sources said that the inclement weather so far has been a big reason. They said the snow melting has been delayed and if it is melting, it is melting at a very slow pace.
An official from Pahalgam Development Authority said that the route up to Chandanwari has been cleared of the snow and the operation is on to clear the route up to the cave.
This official said that the inclement weather in the valley so far has been the main reason as to why the snow clearance operation has not been completed so far. He said that the administration is optimistic that the cave will be accessible through these routes well before the commencement of the Yatra.
