Geelani asks cable operators to stress on Islamic content | Kashmir's cable TV likely to san movies, music | | ET Report SRINAGAR, June 9: English movies, music and other similar entertaining stuff is feared to go off air on Kashmir TVs in the coming days following recent threat calls from new militant groups operational in the trouble-torn Valley. Switching off of such channels is what the poor cable TV operators may have to do to keep their business breathing. Following recent surfacing of militant posters in north Kashmir asking cable TV operators to shun their business, the worried lot today knocked the door of firebrand separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, who is understood to be well-connected with United Jehad Council an amalgamate of Pakistan-based militant outfits operating in Kashmir. Geelani has advised the cable operators to refrain from airing such "obscene channels which cannot be watched together by members of Kashmiri families." An advisory in this regard came to fore this morning when the representatives of the cable TV operators, under the banner Kashmir Cable Operators Association visited the Hyder Pora residence of Geelani and apprised him about the recent threat from militants they are facing. "While running cable TV business during militancy, we have always been between the devil and deep sea, and now yet again we have been threatened to close down our business," the cable TV operators told the Pakistani hawk. They said by being forced to close down the business, they would be left with no options but to go for suicide with their families. "In a detailed discussion with Kashmir Cable Operators Association at his residence in Hyder Pora, SAS Geelani assured that they will investigate the authenticity of the posters which were circulated by some unknown organization about the ban on Telecom and Cable TV industry in Kashmir," said a spokesman of the association. Geelani is understood to have admitted that cable operators have taken heavy loans from banks to establish the networks and a large volume of unemployed youth are earning bread and butter from this industry. "However Geelani advised us that we should stop the transmission of immoral English or Hindi TV channels especially English movies, music and fashion shows and at the same time stress more on Islamic and ethical TV channels," said a cable TV operator privy to the meeting. Sources in Hurriyat G said Geelani is expected to give a press conference in this regard later this week. |
