Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, June 9: Police used force and arrested scores of employees while they were heading towards Civil Secretariat here to register protest against the government order to abolish the municipal committees of Pahalgam and Gulmarg.
This morning scores of employees under the banner of Employees Joint Action Committee (Qayoom faction) assembled at the Press Enclave so as to protest against the government decision. The protesting employees mostly consisting of employees of Urban Local Bodies department raised slogans against the government and demanded immediate roll-back of the order.
As the protesting employees led by EJAC-Q Chairman, Abdul Qayoom Wani started to move towards the Civil Secretariat the huge posse of police present there stopped them and did not allow them to move ahead. The protesting employees offered a stiff resistance and were not ready to budge an inch.
On this the police acted swiftly and arrested many of the employees including Qayoom and whisked them away to the nearby Kothi Bagh police station in police vehicles. However, some of the employees including Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) Chairman, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori managed to give police a slip and reached the Maisuma area.
At Maisuma the police once again swooped on the protesters and arrested some of them while carrying out mild lathi-charge. However, few employees including Manzoor managed to flee at this place as well. These employees were arrested by the police while they reached the Budshah Bridge. The arrested employees were also taken to the Kothi Bagh police station.
Condemning the police action, Chairman ULBEUF said the police did not allow them to carry out the peaceful protest march up to Civil Secretariat. He said the employees of the department are quite aghast over the government decision and in order to give vent to their feelings the EJAC-Q had called for march to Civil Secretariat.
"The order of abolishing the municipal committees of Gulmarg and Pahalgam is arbitrary one. The concerned stake holders were not taken into confidence before the issuance of this order. The chief minister should immediately intervene and order for the immediate roll-back of the order failing which the employees of the department would carry out a state wide agitation programme," said Manzoor.
The ULBEUF Chairman said that a meeting would be held on June 11 wherein the next course of action would be decided.
He expressed dismay that the Urban Local Bodies department after the transfer and elevation of former Director, Hilal Ahmad Parray. He accused the state government of being non-serious in solving the problems of employees especially those belonging to Local Bodies department.
