Tehreek-e-Hurriyat activist shot dead in Sopore

BARAMULLA, June 9: Panic gripped Sopore town following killing of an employee of the health department by unknown persons Tuesdayafternoon.
The deceased, believed to be an activists of Syed Ali Shah Geelani's Tehreek-e-Hurriyat has been identified as Altaf Rehman Sheikh, 45, Son of Mohammad Yousf Sheikh near New Colony in Sopore.
According to reports, Sheikh received serious head injuries and was immediately shifted to nearby Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Sopore where he succumbed to injuries, sources said.
Block Medical Officer, Sopore Dr Masood told early times that Altaf Sheikh was attached as a junior pharmacist in Sub District Hospital Sopore from last eight months, whereas he was posted in Sheeri Hospital.
There were bullets in his chest, head and forearm and when he was brought dead to the Hospital, BMO added.
Reports added that Altaf was working as an Over Ground Worker (OGW) for militants and had been arrested by police for some time.
Father of the deceased Mohammad Yousf Sheikh had returned from Pakistan via Nepal in 2004, and is said to be a senior worker of Jamat-e-Islami as well as Hurriyat conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Said sources.
It is learnt that Sheikh's father Mohammad Yousf Sheikh is a well known face of Jama'at-e-Islami in Baramulla district.
Sources on anonymity conditions said that, "tension was prevailing in the Sopore town from last couple of weeks after some posters of Lashkar-e Islam and Tahreek-e Taliban Jammu and Kashmir were surfaced in many villages of Sopore town.
These posters have created chaos and confusion among the general public that who is behind these attacks, as you know that in the month of May a BSNL employee Mohammad Rafiq of Handwara and ex militant of Hizbul outfit Ghulam Hassan Dar of Dooru Sopore were shot dead. And today a pharmacist was killed in a volatile area of Sopore town.
It is important to mention here that on June 6, the newly surfaced suspected militant group Lashkar-e Islam had recently issued a threatening statement against Geelani accusing him of getting 4 militants killed in Sopore area.
A senior police official said that, unidentified gunmen killed Altaf Rehman Sheikh from a point blank range. Deceased was working as a pharmacist in Sub District Hospital Sopore, and we are investigating into the killing of Sheikh.
Meanwhile Hurriyat Faction (G), Syed Ali Geelani has called for a complete shutdown in Baramulla district on Wednesday against the killing.
