As Jammu burnt, BJP MLA enjoyed holidaying in Gulmarg | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 9: The local BJP MLA from Gandhinagar Cantonment constituency and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Kavinder Gupta, was enjoying a cool breeze in famous health resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir when Jammu was burning, especially his constituency. People who voted for Gupta are angry and feel let down as they reposed their faith on such a person who left them alone in the hour of crisis and played no role in controlling the situation. According to the sources when Jammu was burning from June1 to June 5, Kavinder Gupta was ostensibly holidaying at Gulmarg away from the scorching heat of Jammu and the flared up situation which took a dangerous turn after killing of a youth in alleged police firing. There is an old saying that wise enemy is better than a foolish friend, not many people would have come to know about Gupta's pleasure trip to Gulmarg had not one of his friend's posted Gupta's photo on the social networking website Facebook bragging about his pleasure trip to Gulmarg. Gupta's friend posted his picture to show it to the world that how powerful Gupta has become as entire state machinery was at his disposal in the famous health resort. The picture was posted on the Facebook on June 4, 2015. When a national news channel contacted Gupta on June 4 to seek his comment over the emerging situation in Jammu he told the reporter that he was on his way to Jammu by road. However, he reached Jammu by air on June 5 afternoon and passed through the curfew bound area without making any attempt to meet the people. 'This is unbecoming of a public representative. Why should people vote for a party when its top leader leaves people in crisis? Only a thick-skinned politician can behave in the manner Gupta. He must have rushed to the Cantonment to help diffuse the situation soon after the word about the protest had spread," resented Fateh Singh, a Sikh youth. "BJP leaders would have to blame themselves more than anyone else if during next sudden elections our party suffers a crushing defeat. Our popularity has gone down considerably in Jammu,' rued a noted BJP activist from Gandhinagar. At present Gupta is in Jammu and is trying to make up for the blunder he committed. But people have turned their back towards him and seem least interested in entertaining the politician. Pertinently, BJP leaders turning their back towards the people in crisis, have reminded them of flamboyant Dr Farooq Abdullah. When Dr Farooq was the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir he was often seen enjoying holidays when the state faced worst crisis. In December 2001 Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was forced to send an SOS to Dr Abdullah holidaying in London when the Valley was virtually burning. There was uncertainty and fear stalking Jammu and Kashmir and a large number of people had left their homes in the border areas. The Chief Minister, however, had no time to even express sympathy with them. |
