Woman lecturer commits suicide; family protests, blocks highway

Jammu, June 9: Seeking justice, irate parents and relatives of a 33 year-old mathematics lecturer who allegedly committed suicide by hanging self at her residence after her in-laws purportedly harassed her today stage protest and also blocked the Jammu- Pathankote National Highway for few hours at Kaluchack demanding action against the guilty.
"The deceased has been identified as Parul Sharma (33) wife of Rajinder Sharma of Kaluchack, police sources said.
Police sources said after getting the information, family members of the deceased immediately reached to the spot and shifted her to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) where she was declared as brought dead. Sources said, "After getting postmortem conducted upon the body, the police handed over the body of deceased to family member for last rites, they added.
Police sources further said that parents of the deceased put body of the deceased on Jammu-Pathankot National highway and blocked the vehicular traffic demanding action against the in-laws of Parul and alleged that the she was murdered by her in-laws.
To lodge protest, the family blocked the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway this evening and disrupted the traffic demanding action, police said. Later, senior cops reached the spot and pacified the protestors. The deceased was a gold medalist and a mathematics lecturer, presently posted at Director Education office Muthi.
Meanwhile Police have registered a case under section 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498A (dowry) of CrPC in Gangyal Police Station and launched further investigation.
Police sources said that earlier this morning the deceased was found hanging at her residence and the in-laws informed her parents.
Police said that a case in this connection has been registered at Gangyal police stations and further investigation is on.
