Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 13: While the ruling PDP-BJP and NC-Congress have decided to contest the Srinagar and Anantnag Parliamentary by-polls mutually but there is fighting within the parties over fielding of the candidates, sources say.
Official sources said the Election Commission of India has decided to conduct the by-polls of Srinagar and Anantnag Parliamentary seats in April next year. Both these seats have fallen vacant as Mehbooba Mufti took over Chief Minister of the state and left the seat while Tariq Hamid Karra has resigned over difference with the party.
Sources said the NC and Congress which are out of power have almost decided to field NC candidate from Srinagar while the Congress will fight on Anantnag seat. "Both parties will support each other candidates," a Congress leader said.
It has been decided that NC President will contest from Srinagar.
Addressing party workers in Srinagar, the National Conference President Farooq Abdullah has said, "It might be my last election. You have to remember it when you vote in April and ensure my success." Sources said in these meeting Farooq has invoked Sheikh Abdullah and told old party workers of the NC that they had promised with NC founder that the party will be strengthened.
From this statement, it has almost been clear that Farooq Abdullah will be himself the party candidate for the Srinagar Parliamentary elections.
"He has been giving Srinagar centric statements keeping in view of the upcoming elections. He wants to please separatists which may help him in elections," an NC leader said.
While for Anantnag seat, sources said the NC will support Congress candidate but there are differences over fielding of the candidates.
"A strong lobby within Congress wants its State Chief G A Mir to fight from Anantnag Parliamentary seat but there is a strong opposition from another group who want Ghulam Nabi Azad to contest from there," the Congress leader said.
It has been seen that G A Mir has intensified Congress campaigning in south Kashmir. "The NC will contest from Srinagar while Congress will fight from south Kashmir. The Congress has held several meeting with their leaders and workers in south Kashmir," he said.
Similarly, sources said it has been decided that PDP will field its candidate from south Kashmir. "Many leaders including Mehbooba's brother (Tasadaq) and her uncle Sartaj Madni are in the race but the final decision has not been taken. The BJP has agreed that it won't field its candidate from south Kashmir," a PDP leader.
But sources said there are differences between the coalition parties over fielding of candidate from Srinagar. "The BJP wants to field its candidate from there but the PDP has shown some reservations over its. The PDP believes that BJP has not strong base in Kashmir so they should support the PDP candidate from there," the PDP leader said.
