After getting nod to reopen his sealed hospital, medico joins PDP | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 13: Within weeks of getting permission to reopen his private hospital, which was sealed by the government in the summer, a medico from south Kashmir has joined the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). While the PDP introduced the medico as being the "first such transplant surgeon" from Kashmir, he joined the party in presence of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and party's General Secretary Sartaj Madni. Official documents, a copy which lies with Early Times reveal that the private hospital run by the family of the medico was sealed in July this year when a patient died there due to alleged "medical negligence." Official documents reveal that time the family of the deceased patient hailing from Bagh-e-Mehtab locality here had filed a complaint with the government prompting the authorities to take action. Directorate of Health Services Kashmir had constituted an inquiry team, which after "detailed enquiry came to a conclusion that there has been negligence on part of the doctor and the authorities of the hospital that has led to the death of the patient." The authorities were shocked to discover that the hospital was being run without requisite permission from the competent authority. "The team found that the said hospital was unregistered and was functioning illegally without fulfilling the proper norms set up by the Government. The team which comprised CMO Srinagar, Assistant Director DHSK and District Health Officer Srinagar sealed the hospital," the documents reveal. Official sources said even as an inquiry into the case was pending, the health department issued license to this private hospital to run the facility. "We were under pressure from some ministers to issue the license so we had no options but to let it reopen," said a senior official in the administration, asking not to be identified. Refuting allegations, the surgeon has been saying that the personality of late Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed inspired him to join politics. The medico said PDP has been a strong votary of peace and dialogue between India and Pakistan, and believes that in mutual coexistence lies the future of both the countries. He is the first person to join a mainstream political party since the unrest that began in the Valley on July 8 following the death of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces. Notably, several lower rung mainstream political workers had announced their dissociation from politics following widespread protests in the Valley during the five months ago. Despite repeated attempts the surgeon could not be contacted for comments. |
