NEW DELHI, July 17: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today met here top Central leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, to discuss ways and means to turn the relative calm now at last coming to the Valley into durable peace.
This was Chief Minister's first meeting with Delhi's top leadership after fierce protests broke out in several towns of Kashmir, including border State's summer Capital Srinagar.
Omar began his day by calling on Union Home Minister P Chidambaram. Later, the Chief Minister said that he had detailed discussions with the Home Minister regarding recent developments in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly on law and order front. "I discussed with him about the need to equip better the paramilitary and State Police forces with non-lethal weapons and improved technology for effective crowd control."

JAMMU/RAJOURI, July 17: As the gunbattle between security forces and militants in the Beri Rakh forests of Mendhar in Poonch entered 5th day, a junior commissioned officer (JCO) and a jawan of 37 Rashtriya Rifles (RR)
were wounded today.As part of their strategy to find an escape route, the holed up militants have been changing locationss in the forest since Tuesday last when the encounter began.
Two of them were killed by security forces Thursday after 48 hours of the gunfight.

SRINAGAR, July 17: The general secretary of High Court Bar Association, Srinagar today registered protest against arrest of his president, Mian Abdul Qayoom by setting his black court ablaze in Lal Chowk.
Around 150 lawyers took out a procession today to protest arrest of the Bar President Mian Abdul Qayoom who was detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) last week. The lawyers chanted anti-government slogans and demanded immediate release of their president.
