PM Announces Sops Worth Rs 1,000 Cr | Promises respect to human rights; Says dialogue process can be extended | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, June 8: Winding up his two-day visit on a positive note, Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh today assured Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah of his full cooperation. Besides announcing sops to the tune of Rs 1000 crore, the Prime Minister took serious note of human rights violations in the state.
The Prime Minister, who had a one-on-one meeting with the Chief Minister before leaving for Delhi, took note of complaints relating to human rights.
Visiting the state amid allegations of fake encounters, Singh sent out a firm message to security forces, saying "the government policy is to protect human rights of the people even when dealing with terrorism.
"The security forces in J&K have been strictly instructed to respect the rights of civilians. We will act to remove any deficiency in the implementation of these instructions," he said.
Expressing satisfaction over the outcome three round table conferences, the Prime Minister said the recommendations of these deliberations were being implemented in a step-wise manner.

JAMMU, June 8: Due to forest fire, four landmines exploded today on the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote sub-sector of Poonch. The fire started from the Gola woods on the side of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the morning and soon spread to Balakote, engulfing about 13 km area, police sources said. In the fire, at least 50 landmines exploded at Balakote, the sources added.
Sources said army, police and forest officials were engaged in extinguishing the fire and stopping the flames from spreading to the nearby villages. Panicked by the blasts, residents of Deri Dabsi and Lanjyote villages fled their houses.

RAJOURI, June 8: Taking a suo moto notice of the news item published in the June 8 issue of The early Times under caption "KVIB is hub of corruption here", industries minister SS Salathia has ordered KVIB secretary to look into the matter.
Sources in KVIB (khadi and village industries board) said the minister had asked KVIB secretary Ravinder Singh to initiate a probe into the matter and submit him the report.

JAMMU, June 8: With the arrest of two social welfare department (SWD) employees, including a woman supervisor, from a city hotel here today, police claimed to have busted a flesh trade racket.
The raid was conducted on hotel Krishna Plaza by city police station SHO, Inspector Narinder Singh, on a tip-off, police sources said. In the raid, police caught hold of a SWD woman supervisor and a clerk from the hotel room, the sources added.

RAJOURI, June 8: Confined to an "isolated" room in their house, the Indian braveheart Ruksana Kousar, who shot into fame after killing a Lashkar commander in September last year at Kalsian here, is not allowed to meet her hubby.
Her fault: She dared to go against the wish of her parents and married her personal security officer (PSO) Kabir Hussain of Khatian, Kalakote.
Hussain has, however, threatened to move court if his in-laws did not send Ruksana to live with him.
She married Kabir in a court here on May 26 last after which nikah was performed in a local mosque as per the Muslim rites.

| | Ultra's body to be exhumed in Poonch | | | JAMMU: The body of a top militant, who was killed by security forces in a gun battle in Poonch some time back, would be exhumed and handed over to his parents.
The slain militant -- Liaqat Ali -- hailed from Doda. The decision to exhume the body was taken after his parents expressed the desire to bury him in their ancestral graveyard in Doda, police sources said.
An order to exhume the militant's body had been issued by the Poonch district magistrate, the sources added. Sources said Liaqat's family members came to know about his death in the Poonch encounter from the news items and his photographs published in local newspapers.

| | Burglars decamp with cash from temple | | | UDHAMPUR: Having already struck at three religious places, including the famous Devika temple and a gurdwara, burglars decamped with a donation box from a Shani Dev temple here last night.
The Shani Dev temple is situated near the railway station here. That the burglars had struck at it became known when the priest came to the temple in the morning, police sources said.
